A Tail of Two Fish

Yesterday we went to our favorite Costa Rican beach, Manuel Antonio. It was a fun but short trip since the kids got their fill of sun and sand within two hours. When the bosses say they are done eating sand and running you ragged, you have to leave.

On our way home we saw local fishermen selling on the side of the road. I couldn't resist bringing home a red snapper this fresh. I love how this photo shows the man, the fish, the deal and the cars. Thanks to grandma for making it a Kodak moment.

Maribel came over to teach me how to prep and cook it Tica style. Each fish scale was the size of my thumb and It was the hardest fish I've ever tried to cut in half. She cooked it in olive oil, garlic, onions, special seasoning and added butter toward the end of the fry. It tasted wonderful.

We cooked it up with platinos and she took half home with the fish head to make soup.

This fish (guapote) was from our last dinner in Granada, Nicaragua. It was caught on Lake Nicaragua and served up hot at Valle Mombacho restaurante. Notice the fried cheese and platicones in the upper left corner, the platicones and ensalada on the plate and the funny brown seed pod to the left. We pulled the pod off a massive tree growing on the side of the lake. The boat guide said it was a pompomoche tree. This fish tasted fine but I would choose the fresh snapper any day.
